Professor Ventry Comments for Time Magazine on 'Return-Free' Tax Filing
Professor Dennis Ventry commented for Time magazine on return-free filing, a process in which the government provides free, pre-populated tax returns for taxpayers using information it has from banks, employers, and other institutions. Ventry, who has studied California's return-free filing programs, known as "Cal-File" and "Ready Return," said that those Americans who have been able to test out return-free filing seem to like it.
Ventry said that in California the response to the programs "was amazing. People were like, 'Oh my god, this is the best program the government ever offered.'"
Professor Ventry is an expert in tax policy and legal ethics. His research interests include tax expenditure analysis, family taxation, professional responsibility and standards of care, tax filing and administration, tax compliance, public finance, and tax and legal history. In addition, he was recently added as a co-author on the casebook, Federal Income Taxation with Paul McDaniel, Martin McMahon, Jr., and Daniel L. Simmons.
