Professor Ventry Cited on Mortgage Reform by Wall Street Journal

A recent paper by Professor Dennis J. Ventry, Jr. on the mortgage-interest tax deduction was quoted in a Wall Street Journal article calling for the federal government to reexamine tax subsidies for housing.

The Wall Street Journal article quotes from Professor Ventry's "The Accidental Deduction: A History and Critique of the Tax Subsidy for Mortgage Interest," published earlier this year.  "Housing tax policies fueled the boom and exacerbated the bust," Professor Ventry wrote, and because tax deductions rise with the size of a loan, the breaks "began effectively subsidizing gambles on fluctuations in housing prices."

Professor Ventry is an expert in tax policy and has written widely in the field. His research interests include family taxation, tax expenditure analysis, legal ethics and professional standards, tax and legal history, tax compliance and administration, and public finance.
