Professor Ventry Cited on California Tax Proposal by San Jose Mercury News

Professor Dennis Ventry is cited in a recent article in the San Jose Mercury News regarding the ways in which California may respond to recent changes in federal tax law reducing the state and local tax deduction (SALT).

The reduction amounts to a significant tax increase for many in California, but the state could address that by reclassifying tax payments as charitable donations, which are still deductible. California Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León has introduced a bill that would do so, prompting questions as to whether the deduction would be permitted by the Internal Revenue Service. Professor Ventry is among the legal experts cited by the San Jose Mercury News saying that the plan could pass legal scrutiny.

Professor Ventry is an expert in tax policy and legal ethics. His research interests include tax expenditure analysis, family taxation, professional responsibility and standards of care, tax filing and administration, tax compliance, public finance, and tax and legal history. In addition, he is Chairman of the IRS Advisory Council, and co-author on the casebook, Federal Income Taxation with Martin McMahon, Jr., Daniel L. Simmons, and Bradley T. Borden.
