Professor Ventry Cited in Bee Tax Software Op-ed
An article by Professor Dennis J. Ventry, Jr. was cited in an op-ed published in the Sacramento Bee. The viewpoint by Maria Sotero, a research associate at the New America Foundation, is critical of efforts by Intuit, which sells the tax-filing software program TurboTax, to shut down California's free tax-filing software programs ReadyReturn and Free File. Sotero cites Professor Ventry's study in debunking Intuit's claims regarding the state program's shortcomings.
"Though Intuit claims it will cover more taxpayers, a tax analysis report by UC Davis School of Law Associate Professor Dennis Ventry states that the company in fact extends free service only to users with incomes up to $31,000 a year," writes Sotero. "The result is that Californians will pay millions more for the privilege of filing their taxes online."
