Professor Simmons Confirmed as Academic Senate Vice-Chair, Receives Nash Prize
Professor Daniel L. Simmons was honored by his UC Davis colleagues this week for his work as an advocate for faculty.
On April 22, the University Assembly confirmed his nomination by the Academic Council to serve in 2009-2010 as the vice-chair of the University of California Academic Senate and as faculty representative to the UC Board of Regents. Professor Simmons will become the chair of the Senate in 2010. He will be the first person to serve a second time in this position. (Professor Simmons was vice chair of the system-wide Senate in 1992-1994 and chair in 1994-1995.) Another King Hall faculty member, Professor John Oakley, was vice chair in 2005-06 and chair in 2006-07.
In addition, Professor Simmons received the Charles P. Nash prize for faculty advocacy at a celebration diner held April 27. The prize, funded by the campus community and the family of the late UC Davis Professor Charlie P. Nash, is awarded by the Davis Faculty Association, Davis Division of the Academic Senate, and UC Davis Academic Federation to commemorate Nash's exceptional achievement in promoting shared governance and advocating for faculty interests and welfare.
Daniel L. Simmons is a UC Davis Professor of Law and a national expert on tax law, with an emphasis on corporate and partnership taxation.
