Professor Simmons Comments on Honorary Degrees for WWII Internees for USNews.com
Professor Daniel L. Simmons commented for USNews.com, the website of US News & World Report, on the UC Regents' decision to grant honorary degrees to the approximately 700 Japanese-Americans who left their studies at the University of California when they were forced into internment camps during World War II. The Regents' action was prompted by the recommendation of a task force co-chaired by Professor Simmons and University Vice President Judy Sakaki.
"The task force was set up to figure out how we should recognize these people," Professor Simmons states. "These folks were our students at UC, and their relationship was severed by what is now considered an unjust act. This is an opportunity to restore justice in the grove of academia."
Daniel L. Simmons is a UC Davis Professor of Law and a national expert on tax law, with an emphasis on corporate and partnership taxation.
