Professor Shestowsky Receives 2007 DTA Award
Professor Donna Shestowsky is the recipient of the 2007 Distinguished Teaching Award (DTA). She is an acting professor of law and legal scholar with interests in alternative dispute resolution, juries, and legal psychology. She joined the UC Davis School of Law faculty in 2004, and since then, has provided exceptional service to the Law School as a dedicated, accessible teacher, always working to improve her teaching methods. She teaches criminal law, negotiation strategy, alternative dispute resolution, and a seminar in legal psychology. She also coaches King Hall's interschool negotiations team.
Shestowsky earned her B.A. and M.S. degrees in Psychology from Yale University and her J.D. and Ph.D. in Psychology from Stanford University. Before joining the Davis faculty, she was jointly appointed on the visiting faculty at Northwestern University's School of Law and the Kellogg School of Management and was a Fellow of Northwestern University's Dispute Resolution Research Center.
Her primary research objective is to examine basic assumptions underlying the structure of the legal system and to explore ways in which the judicial system might be improved using the methodological and analytic tools of psychological theory and research. She has published articles in leading law reviews and peer-reviewed psychology journals, including Stanford Law Review; Psychology, Public Policy and Law; and Law and Human Behavior and chapters in The Negotiator’s Fieldbook: The Desk Reference for the Experienced Negotiator and Frontiers of Social Psychology: Negotiations.
Shestowsky was the unanimous choice of the DTA Committee, which included Professor Edward J. Imwinkelried, last year's recipient; Katharine Ruhl '07; and Bradley Wishek '85.
Dean Rex Perschbacher thanked the committee for their hard work and dedication in reviewing the submissions, which were of particularly high quality this year and reflected excellent work by the student and alumni nominators. He said the many enthusiastic and worthy nominations made the Committee’s choice a difficult one. "The Committee was deeply impressed with the teaching excellence, which symbolizes King Hall, demonstrated by the other fine nominees: Diane Marie Amann, Jennifer Chacón, Holly Cooper, Robert Hillman, Amagda Pérez, Tim Schooley, Madhavi Sunder, and Martha West.
