Professor Reynoso Comments on Gutierrez Shooting for Democrat
Professor Cruz Reynoso commented on the shooting death of Luis Gutierrez Navarro for a recent article in the Woodland Democrat. Gutierrez was shot and killed by Yolo County deputies on April 30 in an incident that has brought criticism from Latino groups in Yolo and Sacramento counties. The state Attorney General and Yolo County District Attorney have declined to charge the deputies, but Professor Reynoso has vowed to conduct an independent investigation into the killing, which is also being reviewed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
"There's a lot of work left to do," said Professor Reynoso. "We found that invariably that a body that can look at the whole issue is very important."
A member of the UC Davis School of Law faculty since 2001, Professor Reynoso is an internationally known civil rights leader and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. He has been awarded the UC Davis Medal, the university's highest honor, and the Law School has established the Cruz & Jeannene Reynoso Scholarship for Legal Access to help students with financial needs.
