Professor Pruitt Speaks to Guardian, Capital Public Radio, KPFA About Recall of Shasta County Supervisor

Professor Lisa Pruitt spoke to the The Guardian newspaper, Capital Public Radio’s Insight with Vicki Gonzalez and Bay Area public radio station KPFA’s UpFront program about the recent, apparently successful (according to preliminary vote tallies) militia-backed recall of a moderate Republican Shasta County supervisor.

Some rural and quasi-rural residents fed up with state public health mandates are directing their anger at local officials, Pruitt told The Guardian in a story published Feb. 3. “Anger at state officials is now trickling down," she said.

Interviewed on Insight on Feb. 9, Pruitt told Gonzalez the Shasta County vote might not have an effect on surrounding rural counties with smaller populations because their boards of supervisors might already be "further to the right."

In her Feb. 9 KPFA interview, Pruitt discussed Shasta County politics as well as the origins of the Northern California and southern Oregon “State of Jefferson” breakaway movement.

Lisa R. Pruitt, Martin Luther King Jr. Professor at UC Davis School of Law, is a scholar whose recent work explores the legal relevance of rural spatiality, including how it inflects dimensions of gender, race, and ethnicity.  Pruitt's work also considers rural-urban difference in transnational and international contexts. She is the recipient of the law school’s 2020 Distinguished Teaching Award.
