Professor Polcz Writes for The Hill, is Cited by Sen. Sanders in N.Y. Times

Professor Sarah Polcz published an op-ed in The Hill on April 29, "Let the public share in the rewards of artificial intelligence."

The op-ed stems from Polcz's article, co-authored with George Washington University Law Professor Jeremy Bearer-Friend, "Sharing the Algorithm: The Tax Solution to Generative AI."

The Columbia Journal of Tax Law article argues that, "Generative AI poses immediate and long-term threats. Tax policy can help. Imposing an AI Tax that requires remittances in the form of equity rather than cash will help mitigate many of the risks of generative artificial intelligence."

Sen. Bernie Sanders referenced The Hill piece in a June 1 New York Times essay headlined “A.I. is a Public Resource. You Should Own Half of It.” Sanders gave a related speech on the Senate floor announcing he will introduce a bill to create an AI American sovereign wealth tax, crediting Polcz’s and Bearer-Friend’s research as inspiration.

Polcz has appeared on several podcasts including Tax Notes Talk, Ipse Dixit and the Business Scholarship Podcast with Professor Andrew Jennings. Forbes published part of her interview with Tax Notes and her research proposing this tax policy strategy was also added to The Windfall Trust's AI Policy Atlas.

Sarah Polcz's research explores the intersection of law and psychological science. Her scholarship focuses on how basic cognitive processes relate to more complex social phenomena such as market culture and the moral intuitions underlying intellectual property law.
