Professor Joslin participates in drafting uniform law for unmarried cohabitants

In December, Professor Courtney Joslin attended the drafting meeting for the Uniform
Economic Rights of Unmarried Cohabitants Act. She is an official observer on the committee,
which is charged with drafting a uniform law to standardize the economic rights of unmarried
cohabitants.

Her recent article “Autonomy in the Family” (UCLA Law Review) argues that the current
contract-based approach to unmarried cohabitant rights must be abandoned in favor of one
that recognizes and respects the families that people have chosen to create.

Also in December, Joslin attended the meeting of the Joint Editorial Board for Uniform Family
Law (JEB-UFL). The JEB-UFL is responsible for monitoring all uniform and model acts that are
family-law related and recommends subjects for possible uniform laws. She serves on the
board as the liaison from the AALS.
