Professor Jorjani Discusses Treatment of Immigrants in the U.S.

Professor Raha Jorjani of the Immigration clinic was interviewed by COLORLINES, a national newsmagazine on race and politics, in their July/August 2008 edition, on the general treatment of immigrants in the United States. Jorjani observed that many immigrants, even those living in the U.S. legally, feel they are punished for the same mistakes time and again. The Immigration Law Clinic assisted Tatyana Mithrohina, a Russian immigrant facing deportation after hitting her two­-year-old son, with an appeal after she lost her case before an immigration judge. Mithrohina was jailed, while authorities placed her son in foster care. The article argues that sometimes the punishments faced by immigrants are grossly disproportionate to their mistakes. Before joining the UC Davis Immigration Law Clinic, Jorjani spent time working in Arizona detention facilities, as well as with the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project.
