Professor Joo Comments on Silicon Valley and National Security Agency for San Francisco Chronicle
Professor Thomas Joo commented for a report in the San Francisco Chronicle regarding the difficulties Silicon Valley companies face as they are caught between the National Security Agency's demands that they secretly turn over large amounts of consumer data and federal laws requiring that they disclose information to investors.
Professor Joo said that a national security law that requires companies to keep quiet could trump the law that demands they disclose information to investors, but companies will often make a point of showing that they only gave up data when forced by the government.
"They are saying, 'We don't want you to think we just gave away the data. We know you are going to be mad. Don't blame us,'" Joo said.
Joo, a professor at UC Davis School of Law, specializes in the areas of corporate governance and race and the law.
