Professor Joh Publishes Op-ed on FBI v. Apple in Sacramento Bee
Professor Elizabeth Joh published an op-ed in the Sacramento Bee on FBI v. Apple, the legal conflict over whether the government can compel Apple to create software that would help law enforcement access information stored in an iPhone used by Syed Rizwan Farook, one of the two people involved in the mass shooting in San Bernardino in December 2016.
In the article, "Outcome of FBI fight with Apple will affect your privacy," Professor Joh writes that the disposition of the case will have wide-ranging implications for the ability of individuals to keep their personal information safe on smartphones and other devices.
"Once Apple creates the means to bypass the security features it has created to ensure the security of the information on its phones, that software will be prized not only by law enforcement officials, but also by organized crime rings, identity thieves, and foreign intelligence agencies," writes Joh. "That's where all of our interests come in."
As Joh writes, "The extraordinary law enforcement means of today, if left unchecked, become the routine methods of tomorrow."
Professor Joh's scholarship focuses on criminal procedure and policing, with a special emphasis on DNA evidence, undercover policing, and new surveillance technologies.
