Professor Joh Comments for Wired on Government Hacking of Private Computers

Professor Elizabeth Joh was quoted in a Wired magazine article reporting the various ways in which government agencies hack into private computers.  Professor Joh commented on the case of an FBI investigation of a child pornography website in which the agency continued to operate the website for a period of weeks after it took control of it.

"The public might want to know: how did the FBI figure out whether on balance it's worth it to run a child porn web site for two weeks, given some of what's involved in the covert operations will essentially permit more child porn to be distributed?" said Joh. "Someone has to make [those] calculations, but we don't know how that calculation is made."

Professor Joh's scholarship focuses on criminal procedure and policing, with a special emphasis on DNA evidence, undercover policing, and new surveillance technologies.
