Professor Joh Comments on Surveillance Technology for Ars Technica

Professor Elizabeth Joh commented for Ars Technica regarding an ordinance approved by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors that requires "continued oversight and regular evaluation" for law enforcement agencies prior to the acquisition of surveillance technology.

"If secrecy breeds suspicion, openness encourages oversight," said Joh. "In the post-Snowden era, communities want to know how the police are doing what they do, not just that they are achieving data-driven results."

Professor Joh's scholarship focuses on criminal procedure and policing, with a special emphasis on DNA evidence, undercover policing, and new surveillance technologies.
