Professor Imwinkelried Delivers Keynote Address at NYU-CUPL Conference

On July 11, New York University and China University of Political Science and Law hosted an online conference on wrongful convictions for Chinese Criminal Law and Evidence scholars. Professor Ed Imwinkelried delivered the keynote address. In his remarks, Professor Imwinkelried stressed the need for judges and litigators to become much more familiar with scientific methodology. More specifically, he argued that they need to learn the parameters of the pertinent validation studies to ensure that a methodology can be reliably applied to the specific facts of a pending case. He cited the example of probabilistic genotyping software (PGS) programs used to analyze complex DNA samples. The validation studies for those programs have established both minima for sample size and maxima for the number of contributors.  

Professor Imwinkelried is a world-renowned evidence expert who has published extensively in the field.
