Professor Ikemoto Testifies for Assembly Panel on Proposed State Amendment Enshrining Abortion Rights

Professor Lisa Ikemoto testified before the Assembly Judiciary Committee on June 23 regarding Senate Constitutional Amendment No. 10.

The measure would amend the California Constitution to prohibit the state from denying or interfering with an individual’s “fundamental right to choose to have an abortion and their fundamental right to choose or refuse contraceptives.”

Passed by the Legislature and approved by Gov. Gavin Newsom on June 29 – five days after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade – the resolution will be presented to California voters in November.

Lisa Ikemoto, Martin Luther King Jr. Professor of Law at UC Davis School of Law, has written extensively on genetic and reproductive technology, the regulation of fertility and pregnancy, and race and gender disparities in health care. Her current work examines emerging issues in regenerative medicine, including stem cell research, and the human tissues market.
