Professor Ikemoto Talks to N.Y. Times About Reproductive Rights in Japan

Professor Lisa Ikemoto spoke to the New York Times for a June 21 story on reproductive rights in Japan, where five women have sued the government over its Maternal Protection Act, which blocks most women from seeking sterilization procedures.

The Japanese medical profession is “still very patriarchal in its thinking,” Ikemoto told the Times.

Lisa Ikemoto, Martin Luther King Jr. Professor of Law at UC Davis School of Law, has written extensively on genetic and reproductive technology, the regulation of fertility and pregnancy, and race and gender disparities in health care. Her current work examines emerging issues in regenerative medicine, including stem cell research, and the human tissues market.
