Professor Ikemoto Comments for Slate on Surrogacy Agreements
Professor Lisa Ikemoto is quoted in a Slate article on legal issues raised by surrogate parenting agreements. In numerous cases, disputes have arisen over rights of parents and surrogates, but unlike adoption, few laws or regulations exist to define these relationships, Professor Ikemoto said.
To a large extent, the law "puts a lot of trust in a surrogacy center to make sure that these things are carried out appropriately," Ikemoto said. "It's very industry-friendly, and by ‘industry,' I'm referring to the fertility industry."
Lisa Ikemoto is a Martin Luther King, Jr. Professor at the UC Davis School of Law. She has written extensively on genetic and reproductive technology, the regulation of fertility and pregnancy, and race and gender disparities in health care. Her current work examines emerging issues in regenerative medicine, including stem cell research, and the human tissues market.
