Professor Hing Publishes Book on NAFTA, Globalization, and Immigration
Professor Bill Hing has published Ethical Borders: NAFTA, Globalization, and Mexican Migration, a new book on the need to promote economic development in Mexico as part of any comprehensive immigration reform policy. The book is out now on Temple University Press.
Professor Hing said the thrust of the book is contained in his essay, "Obama Can Solve Illegal Immigration - Bail Out Mexico," published in New American Media earlier this year. "Comprehensive reform no doubt will include much-needed proposals for increased family and employment-based visas," he writes. "Expanding those categories is necessary and will help reduce the pressure that leads to unauthorized border crossings. But at the end of the day, reducing the substantial flow across the southern border will require the expansion of the economy and job growth in Mexico, so that more Mexicans will be able to stay home."
Professor Hing is recognized nationally as an immigration law and community lawyering expert. He is the founder of the Immigrant Legal Resource Center in San Francisco.
