Professor Feeney Comments on Prop. 14 for KGO-7
Professor Floyd Feeney commented on potential legal challenges to Proposition 14, the open primaries initiative passed by California voters on June 8, for a news report on San Francisco ABC affiliate KGO-7.
Opponents of the new law have vowed to challenge its constitutionality in court, but Professor Feeney said such challenges may be difficult in light of a 2008 Supreme Court decision upholding a similar law in Washington state.
"This law specifically refers to the decision by the Supreme Court and I think it's going to be difficult to overturn," Professor Feeney said.
Floyd Feeney is the Homer G. and Ann Berryhill Angelo Professor of Law at the UC Davis School of Law and the winner of the Law School's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1986 and 2008. The author of seven books and numerous articles, Feeney has received awards from the National Institute of Justice and the California Probation, Parole, and Correctional Association, and is a nationally recognized scholar on election law.
