Professor Feeney Comments for CBS-13 on ‘Good Samaritans' and Police
Professor Floyd Feeney commented for Sacramento television station CBS-13 on an incident in Orangevale in which a "good Samaritan" helped police by tackling and wrestling to the ground a suspect who was fleeing through his yard.
Professor Feeney expressed concerns about civilians getting involved in police activity. Although extenuating circumstances may call for intervention, "good Samaritans" can find themselves in court if they become involved in physical altercations, Feeney said.
"The person who was tackled or harmed may sue you," said Feeney.
Floyd Feeney is the Homer G. and Ann Berryhill Angelo Professor of Law at the UC Davis School of Law and the winner of the Law School's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1986 and 2008. The author of seven books and numerous articles, Feeney has received awards from the National Institute of Justice and the California Probation, Parole, and Correctional Association, and is a nationally recognized scholar on election law.
