Professor Dodge Meets to Discuss Restatement of Foreign Relations Law

On October 8, Professor William S. Dodge discussed Preliminary Draft No. 3 of the Restatement (Fourth) of Foreign Relations Law with the Project's counselors, advisers, and members of the Members Consultative Group at a meeting in New York.

The draft covers jurisdiction to prescribe (including topics such as the presumption against extraterritoriality, the act of state doctrine, and customary international law governing jurisdiction to prescribe) and jurisdiction to adjudicate in civil cases (including personal jurisdiction, forum non conveniens, and discovery). Professor Dodge serves as a co-reporter for the project, along with Professor Paul Stephan of the University of Virginia School of Law and Professor Anthea Roberts of the London School of Economics and Political Science. The American Law Institute initiated the project in 2012 and completion is expected in 2017.

Professor Dodge serves as a Co-Reporter for the American Law Institute's Restatement (Fourth) of Foreign Relations Law: Jurisdiction and as a member of the State Department's Advisory Committee on International Law. He is a co-author of the casebook Transnational Business Problems and a co-editor of International Law in the U.S. Supreme Court: Continuity and Change, which won the American Society of International Law's 2012 certificate of merit. He has authored more than 40 other publications in books and law reviews.
