Professor Courtney Joslin Helps Draft Bill Approved by California Assembly Committee

Legislation to provide the same legal protection to children of same-sex couples as is afforded to other families passed the California Assembly Judiciary Committee earlier this month on a 9-0 vote. The measure, AB 2684, authored by Assemblymember Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica), makes various statutory changes to update California’s Uniform Parentage Act (UPA). 

UC Davis Law Professor Courtney Joslin participated in drafting AB 2684. Professor Joslin also served as the Reporter for the Uniform Parentage Act (2017). Originally promulgated in 1973, versions of the UPA have been enacted in about half the states.

AB 2684 is co-sponsored by the National Center for Lesbian Rights and Equality California. The bill now heads to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

Professor Joslin is a scholar in the field of family and relationship recognition, with a particular focus on same-sex and non-marital couples.
