Professor Cooper to speak on refugee crisis at New York Times event in S.F.

On Feb. 26, Professor Holly Cooper will be among the panelists at a San Francisco event focusing on the international refugee crisis.

The event, sponsored by the New York Times, will be held in the Curran Theater, 445 Geary St., where a production of the drama “The Jungle” will be presented March 26-May 19. The interior of the theater is being transformed into a refugee camp’s Afghan café, reflecting the drama’s focus on a self-governing community of refugees from several countries that emerged in Calais, France.

Professor Cooper, '98, co-director of the Immigration Law Clinic, has extensive litigation experience defending the rights of immigrants and is a nationally recognized expert on immigration detention issues and on the immigration consequences of criminal convictions.

The discussion, which is open to the public, will be moderated by the New York Times’ national immigration correspondent, Miriam Jordan.  Also on the panel will be Kirk Semple, a Mexico City-based correspondent who has traveled with immigrant caravans, and Katharine Gin, co-founder and executive director of Immigrants Rising.
