Professor Chin Quoted in Los Angeles Times on Presidential Eligibility
Professor Gabriel "Jack" Chin commented for the Los Angeles Times on the constitutional requirements for presidential eligibility. One such requirement is that the president must be "natural-born citizen" of the United States, and Republican candidate Donald Trump has questioned whether another candidate, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who was born in Canada to a U.S. citizen mother, would be eligible.
Professor Chin said that although Cruz's legal eligibility is not seriously in doubt, such questions are "designed to insinuate that the candidate might really be a foreigner or, in any event, that their background is odd, unusual, and possibly suspicious."
Gabriel "Jack" Chin, who joined the King Hall faculty in 2011, is a prolific and much-cited criminal and immigration law scholar whose work has addressed many of the most pressing social issues of our time.
