Professor Chin Quoted in Bloomberg on Hong Yen Chang Ruling
Professor Gabriel "Jack" Chin commented for Bloomberg Business News on the recent California Supreme Court opinion granting a license to practice law in the state to Hong Yen Chang, who was denied admission to the California bar more than a century ago as a result of laws that discriminated against Chinese immigrants.
Chin acted as faculty advisor for King Hall's Asian-Pacific American Law Students Association, which petitioned the Court for Chang's admission. The Bloomberg article explores the impact of the Chang ruling on a legal profession that is still struggling to diversify.
"I know in this day and age, there are very, very few people who consciously think, ‘I only want white men at my firm,'" said Chin. "Most attorneys would probably be very happy if their colleagues were diverse, but it's going to take some time to get there."
Gabriel "Jack" Chin, who joined the King Hall faculty in 2011, is a prolific and much-cited criminal and immigration law scholar whose work has addressed many of the most pressing social issues of our time.
