Professor Chander Speaks at Aspen Forum on Technology Policy
Professor Anupam Chander spoke at the annual Aspen Forum sponsored by the Technology Policy Institute in Aspen, Colorado. His comments were prominently featured in a report on the Forum published by Bloomberg BNA.
This year's event, held August 17-19, was organized around the theme of "Tech in Transition: Policy Challenges." Professor Chander participated in a panel on "Data and Trade" that included representatives from Facebook and the Brookings Institution, as well as the Honorable Margaret Broadbent, Chairperson of the International Trade Commission.
Professor Chander highlighted some of the challenges to global flows of information posed by measures in many nations to prevent information from being sent abroad. His remarks drew upon his paper with Senior Research Fellow Uyen Le, "Breaking the Web: Data Localization vs. the Global Internet," forthcoming in the Emory Law Journal.
"Often data protection becomes data protectionism," Professor Chander said, in remarks that were quoted by Bloomberg BNA. "Stopping data at the border is not the way to protect privacy and security."
Professor Anupam Chander is a leading scholar in the law of globalization and digitization, and has written widely on international law and cyber law. He is also Director of the California International Law Center at King Hall.
