Professor Anupam Chander and Nicholas Godlove '09 are quoted in a Wall Street Journal Law Blog entry on the trial of Ross Ulbricht, who is accused of creating and running Silk Road, an online service that allegedly enabled anonymous users to conduct illegal transactions including the sales of narcotics and fake passports.
"The thought has been that you can create the perfect crime -- sell illegal substances from wherever you are in the world while making it impossible for the government to track you down," Chander said.
Godlove, a researcher at the Arizona State University School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, is paraphrased in noting that the trial will clarify what kinds of bitcoin transactions may qualify as money laundering.
Professor Chander, a leading scholar of international economic law and cyberlaw, is the author of The Electronic Silk Road: How the Web Binds the World in Commerce, published in 2013 by Yale University Press.
