Professor Chander Comments on Kagan Nomination for Public Radio, KCRA-3
Professor Anupam Chander commented on Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan for "The Takeaway," a radio news program co-produced by Public Radio International and WNYC in New York in partnership with The New York Times, the BBC, and WGBH Boston, and for a news broadcast on local television station KCRA-3.
Kagan's nomination as a potential replacement for retiring Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens has been met with questions regarding her tenure as Dean at Harvard Law School, during which time the Law School was able to hire 32 tenured and tenure-track faculty, yet hired only seven women and only one non-white. Professor Chander co-authored a letter to the White House voicing concerns, and commented for "The Takeaway" that her record at Harvard raises questions about "whether she is willing to go to bat for women and minorities."
In an interview with KCRA-3, Professor Chander commented on a variety of issues regarding the Kagan nomination. He said that Kagan's lack of judicial experience was not a concern, and that despite some possible controversy about Kagan's views supporting the rights of gays to serve in the U.S. military, he expects her to take her place on the Court following "a relatively easy confirmation process."
