Professor Chander Comments on Egypt Unrest and Internet
Professor Anupam Chander commented on the role of internet technology in the uprising in Egypt for a report on local television station CBS-13 that was also broadcast in Los Angeles on KCAL-TV and for the Woodland Democrat.
The protests in Egypt have been "fed and sped" by online communications, he told the Democrat, and social networking technology such as Facebook and Twitter have played important roles. The Egyptian government responded by shutting down access to the internet, prompting to questions as to whether a similar shutdown could occur in the United States. In his television interview, Chander said that would be unlikely. "Our free speech guarantees are the strongest of any country in the world, and we have a free speech tradition that values especially the ability to criticize the government."
