Professor Chander Cited in Ars Technica
Research by Professor Anupam Chander is cited in an article in Ars Technica assessing the impact of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The 1998 law, in conjunction with other measures, freed online companies in the United States from worries over copyright violations in user-generated content, thus giving birth to a wide range of online services.
The article quotes a passage from Professor Chander's "How Law Made Silicon Valley" to support the idea that without the DMCA, Silicon Valley might have become a "valley of death" as legal challenges stifled innovation.
"Because of the insulation brought by U.S. law reforms in the 1990s, American start-ups did not fear a mortal legal blow," said Chander. "The legal privileges granted to Internet enterprises in the United States helped start-ups bridge the valley of death."
Professor Chander, a leading scholar of international economic law and cyberlaw, is the author of The Electronic Silk Road: How the Web Binds the World in Commerce, published in 2013 by Yale University Press.
