Professor Chacón Comments on the Efficacy of Prostitution Regulation
A recent Tucson Citizen article quoted Professor Jennifer Chacón on the topic of whether focusing police efforts on prostitutes does much to affect the demand and market for their services. According to the article, young girls who turn to prostitution are most often sexually abused during childhood. Decriminalizing prostitution and exposing these girls to alternative programs and counseling, rather than threatening to incarcerate them, would serve to increase the likelihood that they will escape their current situation. Chacón teaches criminal law, immigration law, and criminal procedure at the School of Law.
