Professor Brownstein Publishes Op-Ed on Religious Freedom in L.A. Times

Professor Alan Brownstein published an Op-Ed article in the May 11 Los Angeles Times arguing that states that recognize same-sex marriage should try to protect both the autonomy of religious individuals and institutions and the rights of gay and lesbian couples.

"Doing that right, however, requires government to take account of the actual and legitimate needs and interests of both groups," Professor Brownstein writes. "That's what treating people equally is all about."

Professor Brownstein, a nationally recognized Constitutional Law scholar, teaches Constitutional Law, Law and Religion, and Torts at UC Davis School of Law, where he holds the Boochever and Bird Endowed Chair for the Study and Teaching of Freedom and Equality.
