Professor Biagioli Comments for Wired on Inventorship
Professor Mario Biagioli commented for Wired on the patent fight over the Crispr/Cas9 genome editing tool. Attorneys representing two different teams of scientists are battling over credit for discovering the tool, but attributing a "single stroke of genius" for the breakthrough is an inaccurate way of looking at science, Biagioli states.
"I'm not a great believer in the flash-of-genius theory," said Biagioli. "If you are a historian you quickly will realize exactly how many times there are independent discoveries of the same thing."
Professor Biagioli, an internationally renowned expert in the fields of Intellectual Property and the History of Copyright, is the founding Director of the Center for Science and Innovation Studies at UC Davis.
