Professor Bennoune Talks to CNN About Reported Killing of Singer by Taliban
CNN's John Vause interviewed Professor Karima Bennoune, the U.N. Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights, on Sept. 1 about the reported killing of Afghan folk singer Fawad Andarabi by the Taliban and the threat the Taliban poses to other artists in Afghanistan.
“There clearly needs to be investigation, and the perpetrators need to be held accountable” in the Andarabi case, Bennoune told Vause. “But it’s also a message, that the international community and governments need to do everything they can to help at-risk artists and cultural workers leave Afghanistan -- or I fear this will be one of the first killings with many more to come.” Watch the CNN clip.
CNN World also quoted a tweet by Bennoune in its Aug. 30 report on Andarabi.
