Professor Bennoune Speaks at United Nations 'Ending Violence Against Women' Event

Professor Karima Bennoune appeared as a speaker at "Ending Violence against Women: Building on Progress to Accelerate Change," a high-level global United Nations meeting held in Istanbul, Turkey on December 9-10 to assess progress, identify challenges, and renew global political commitments to end violence against women and girls.

Meeting objectives included reviewing progress and challenges that have arisen since the Beijing Declaration Platform for Action-Violence against Women; sharing the latest data and best practices to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls; and seeking fresh political commitments from governments to end violence against women.

Professor Bennoune shared the floor with Purna Sen, Director of the Policy Division of UN Women; H.E. Yohana Yembise, Minister of Women Empowerment and Child Protection, Indonesia; Peter Mladenov, International coordinator in charge of advocacy and partnerships, Youth Peer Educational Network, Bulgaria; and Olivier Adam, Deputy Regional Director for Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent State at the United Nations Development Program.

Karima Bennoune was appointed UN Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights in October 2015.
