Professor Bennoune Speaks on Terrorism in Tour of Canada, Italy, Belgium, and France
Professor Karima Bennoune traveled to Canada, Italy, Belgium, and France as part of a spring break speaking tour in which she spoke on Muslim fundamentalism, terrorism, and other subjects related to her acclaimed book, Your Fatwa Does Not Apply Here: Untold Stories from the Fight against Muslim Fundamentalism.
In Montreal on March 20, Professor Bennoune spoke at a commemoration for victims of Islamist violence in Algeria during the 1990s. The event, organized by an international organization of Algerian victims of terrorism, Ajouad Algerie Memoires, was part of a series of events held around the world around March 22, the date which Ajouad is trying to establish as a day of remembrance for victims of terrorism in Algeria. Professor Bennoune also did interviews with Radio Canada and El Watan in conjunction with her Montreal talk.
On March 23 and 24, Professor Bennoune spoke in Milan and Brussels to members of the European Parliament as part of a public briefing on how Muslim academics and activists can contribute to deconstructing the radical narrative put forth by Islamic extremists. Also on March 24, she lectured at the University of Brescia Department of Law as part of a conference on "International Terrorism: A New Approach and New Strategies," speaking on "the importance of the counter narrative and involvement of civil society in tackling radicalization that can lead to terrorism."
On March 25, Professor Bennoune appeared at an event for the Algerian community in Brussels, speaking on "Terrorism & Radicalization" as part of the Dialogue du Ceder lecture series. On March 27, she spoke at a UC Davis alumni event in Paris, giving a talk on Your Fatwa Does Not Apply Here.
Karima Bennoune is an author, lecturer, teacher, and international law scholar as well as the first Arab-American to be honored with the Derrick A. Bell Award from the Section on Minority Groups of the Association of American Law Schools. She recently was awarded the Dayton Literary Peace Prize for her book Your Fatwa Does Not Apply Here: Untold Stories from the Fight against Muslim Fundamentalism, now available in paperback from W.W. Norton & Company.
