Professor Bennoune Interviewed on Muslim Fundamentalism on RT TV's The Big Picture
Professor Karima Bennoune was interviewed on the RT TV program The Big Picture with Thom Hartmann about her acclaimed book, Your Fatwa Does Not Apply Here: Untold Stories from the Fight against Muslim Fundamentalism. Bennoune commented on the common misperception in the West that Muslims have not opposed the rise of fundamentalism.
"I think it's very important that people understand that for years it has been people of Muslim heritage, whether they're practicing Muslims, whether they are secular Muslims, who have been on the front lines standing up to extremism. The reality is that the world, and the West in particular, has not supported them and instead has supported the Gulf monarchies that have been exporting Wahhabism with their petro dollars," said Bennoune. "I think we really have to flip our way of understanding this around."
Karima Bennoune is an author, lecturer, teacher, and international law scholar as well as the first Arab-American to be honored with the Derrick A. Bell Award from the Section on Minority Groups of the Association of American Law Schools. She recently was awarded the Dayton Literary Peace Prize for her book Your Fatwa Does Not Apply Here: Untold Stories from the Fight against Muslim Fundamentalism, now available in paperback from W.W. Norton & Company.
