Professor Amar Comments on the State of the U.S. Constitution
Professor Vikram Amar commented in the July 11, 2008, Chico News & Review article "Will the Constitution Survive George W. Bush?" The article looks at whether or not President Bush's aggressive assertions of executive power have disrupted the long-held system of balanced authority between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the United States government. Although Bush's stances have sometimes been extreme and unprecedented, Professor Amar suggested that claims that the Constitution is in crisis are exaggerated. He noted that, for the time being at least, the Supreme Court has repeatedly rebuffed President Bush's attempts to aggrandize executive powers.
