Professor Amar Comments on Affirmative Action Ballot Measure

Professor Vikram Amar commented in the October 4, 2008, USA Today article "Voters face affirmative action ban measures."  The article looks at a Colorado ballot measure that would amend the state's constitution to ban government consideration of race or gender in university admissions, contracts, and state spending.   Professor Amar, who has studied the effects of a similar ban passed in California 12 years ago, suggested that such laws make it difficult for state colleges and universities to achieve diversity goals.  "The sad reality is there's no easy way to achieve racial equality without focusing on race," Amar stated.

Professor Amar is a national authority in the fields of constitutional law, civil procedure, criminal procedure, and remedies. His biweekly column for FindLaw, the leading provider of online legal information, centers on his expertise in constitutional law.
