Professor Afsharipour Comments on Proposed Bayer-Monsanto Merger for Sacramento Business Journal

Professor Afra Afsharipour commented for the Sacramento Business Journal on the potential acquisition of Monsanto Co. by Bayer AG.  Both companies have hundreds of employees in Sacramento and Yolo counties, so the merger could have significant implications locally, the article notes.

Professor Afsharipour said that regulators have been more aggressive in recent years in blocking deals that would concentrate too much market share in too few companies, and a combination of Bayer and Monsanto would draw scrutiny from authorities in the U.S., Europe, China, India, and other countries.  She also notes that Monsanto has hired Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, a firm known for its success in fending off unwanted takeovers.
