Nobel Peace Laureate Speaks About Women's Rights and Democracy
Nobel Peace Laureate Shirin Ebadi spoke to an enthusiastic audience at the Mondavi Center on May 17, 2005, about how women's rights relate to the development of democracy in the world, and also about Islam and politics in the Middle East. Earlier in the day, Dr. Ebadi held a press conference and reception attended by the media and guests. Kevin R. Johnson, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, School of Law, and Mabie-Apallas Public Interest Professor of Law made the following remarks.
The University of California, Davis, School of Law is honored to co-sponsor Shirin Ebadi's visit to UC Davis. Her pursuit of social justice is a model for us all. Dr. Ebadi has fought the good fight, defending the rights of women, refugees, and children. Her work resonates deeply with the School of Law and its enduring commitment to social justice. As a lawyer and judge, Shirin Ebadi has shown the good that law and lawyers can do. The School of Law tries to teach our students the lessons that Shirin Ebadi's life symbolizes.
The School of Law is especially proud to welcome a Nobel Peace Prize winner to the UC Davis campus. The law school is in a building named after another Nobel Peace Prize winner - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - and a statue of Dr. King adorns the lobby of the law school. It symbolizes our commitment to his vision of equal justice for all.
Finally, Shirin Ebadi's visit is especially important to the School of Law because she is talking about the pressing issue facing us all today - world peace. The law school, through its many international programs which bring judges and lawyers from around the world to Davis, fully promotes dialogue about the most pressing global social justice issues of our times.
On behalf of the School of Law, thank you Shirin Ebadi for coming to UC Davis and allowing the School of Law to be a part of your historic visit.
