Nationwide Labor and Immigration Rallies Spur Discussion
Associate Dean Kevin Johnson recently discussed the immigration debate with The California Aggie. "After Sept. 11," he said in the article, "incredible amounts of resources have gone into immigration, but we simply cannot just close the borders and keep out everyone who wants to come here." He felt that too much attention on the immigration debate was concentrated on the U.S./Mexico border. He added that national security worries need to focus on all borders, not just Mexico and visa overstays.
On May 1, labor and immigration rallies in support of immigration reform were held across the country, sparking heated debate and occasional clashes. Johnson said in the article that if the immigrants' rights movement wants to transform itself into the new civil rights movement, it will have to be in coalition with other groups. "It can't be just about immigrants' rights but also African Americans' rights and other people's rights as well."
Johnson was also interviewed by CBS13 News during an immigration march on the UC Davis campus.
