Muslim Women Find their Voice

Madhavi Sunder, a UC Davis law professor, provided expertise for an article in The Sacramento Bee on Muslim women finding their voice since 9/11. Sunder, a leading scholar in the legal regulation of culture, said that the attacks on

New York City's twin towers brought American Muslims from South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa together. "It certainly was a galvanizing event. Among young people there's been a revolt against the stereotype of the silent, victimized Muslim women," Sunder said. "Women are digging in deeper, beyond extremism, to a level of individual activism that reflects a more moderate Islam."
