More Women Obtain Law Degrees
According to The Condition of Education, a yearly compilation of statistics released June 1, 2006, by the National Center for Educational Statistics, women now account for about half the enrollment in professional programs such as law, medicine, and optometry. That is up from 22 percent a generation ago.
The Princeton Review recommends that when women are considering law school, they should check certain statistics about the schools they are interested in, such as the percentage of female tenure and tenure-track professors and percentage of women students enrolled.
Since the founding of the UC Davis School of Law, the Law School has been a national leader in attracting outstanding women faculty. Professor Martha S. West, a scholar in employment discrimination, labor law, and sex discrimination, teaches race and gender discrimination. She said in a recent interview, "Almost all of the law on sex discrimination has been created since I began law school in 1970. So it has been exciting for me to teach, in a way, my own personal history as we've gone through the course year after year."
The Davis Law School enrolled 60 percent female students last year.
