John W. Whelan, professor emeritus of law at Hastings College of the Law and former professor of law at UC Davis between 1967-1975, died March 11, 2007, after a brief illness. He was 84 years

Whelan's special interests were Insurance, Contracts, Government Contracts. He is the principal author of the following case books:

He served in the infantry in WWII and the U.S. Army Judge Advocate Generals Corps.1950-55. He retired as Lieutenant Colonel JAGC-USAR.

Whelan was a resident of Mill Valley since 1975; he is survived by his wife of 60 years, Maryrose; a daughter, Moira; a son, Thomas; and four grandsons.
