King Hall Tax Professors Headline Inaugural NorCal Tax Roundtable

UC Davis School of Law Professors Shannon Weeks McCormack, Dan Simmons, and Dennis Ventry presented papers and commentary at the inaugural NorCal Tax Roundtable at Santa Clara University School of Law on October 24. Professor McCormack presented her recent work, "Tax Shelters and Statutory Interpretation: A Much Needed Purposive Approach," and Professor Ventry presented "Protecting Abusive Tax Avoidance."  Professor Simmons provided commentary on a paper presentation of "Choosing Tax: Explicit Elections as an Element of Design in the Federal Income Tax System" by Heather Field of UC Hastings.

The NorCal Tax Roundtable is a collection of tax, estate planning, and employee benefits faculty in the Bay Area and surrounding communities. Participants in this year's event included faculty members from Stanford, University of San Francisco, Santa Clara University, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Hastings, and visiting faculty from the University of Michigan. The expectation is that the Roundtable will grow and become an annual or biannual event, with hosting duties rotating between the various Bay Area law schools.

Shannon Weeks McCormack is a UC Davis Professor of Law and an expert on taxation, with specific legal and scholarship interests in the areas of financial products and international taxation and more specifically in tax avoidance and tax shelters.

Daniel L. Simmons is a UC Davis Professor of Law and a national expert on tax law, with an emphasis on corporate and partnership taxation.

Dennis J. Ventry is a UC Davis Professor of Law and an expert in tax policy who has written many articles and books on the subject. His special interests include family taxation, legal ethics and professional standards, tax history, tax compliance and administration, and public finance.
