King Hall International Law Program Featured in Davis Enterprise

The UC Davis School of Law International Law Program was the subject of a feature story in the Davis Enterprise that included several comments from Professor Alan Brownstein.  The article focused on the Constitutional Law Project led by Professor Brownstein.  The project is part of the Orientation in U.S. Law program that this year drew more than 60 judges, lawyers, and law students, including 15 Fulbright scholars.

Students in the program receive training in the workings of the U.S. legal system with a special emphasis on the Constitution and Bill of Rights.  They argue modified Supreme Court cases and participate in a mock trial as a means of learning about U.S. jurisprudence.  This year's mock trial featured Professor Tim Schooley acting as presiding judge, Michael Barth '91, senior counsel with the California Department of General Services, representing the defense, and Pamela Dominisse, assistant public defender with the Sacramento County Public Defender's Office, as prosecutor.

Professor Brownstein commented that because many of the students come from countries with markedly different cultures and legal systems, "It takes time to develop a sense of how the U.S. judicial system works.  Cultural distinctions, such as religious and racial perspectives, also require adjustment, but I've never met an international student who hasn't had a keen desire to understand our Bill of Rights."

For more than 20 years, the International Law Programs at King Hall have provided exceptional academic educational opportunities for international lawyers, judges, scholars and J.D. students. Educational offerings include an academic year LL.M. program, a summer LL.M. program in International Commercial Law, Summer International Law Programs for foreign legal professionals, a Visiting Scholars program, a Licentiate in Transnational Law, online legal education, and a J.D. Exchange Program.
